1) List the different people/groups represented in the trailer (men/women/Americans etc.)
There're very popular representation like masculine man, soft women, foreign villains, good Americans, America as a safe country, Europe as a dangerous one.
2) For each group you identify, decide whether the representation is a dominant or alternative portrayal. Explain why you think this.
All of them are a dominant portrayal. From the trailer all I can tell is that there's nothing alternative about it. It's the perfect example of fully dominant representation.
3) What stereotypes can you identify in the trailer?
It's a very stereotypical movie that have everything that we can put in an American action movies: men are powerful and need to safe their women from the arms of a foreign villains.
4) Why might the Taken trailer offend or alienate certain groups?
They definitely alienate American white man and America over all. The shots in America are worm and everyone is enjoying their time with the family. The offensive side falls into the European citizens as they're the ones that kidnap the girl in the first place. The shots in Europe are very cold and after only 15 minutes from where they land in Paris, there's terror, panic and women crying all the time.
5) Why do mainstream film and television texts such as Taken so often use stereotypes?
I feel like Americans just want to feel good about themselves and they view their country as a safe place. Also the masculinity in this movie helps the American white males feel a little better about themselves.
