Year 12 Media PPE: Learner response

1) Type up your feedback in full (you do not need to write mark/grade if you do not wish to).

Total: 46 - C

WWW: Lots to credit here: engagement with issues, debates and context. Good use of theory and terminology.

EBI: Keep working on the written English!
Sharper questions focus required in places e.g. Q1 and Capital in Q8
Need a bit more specific reference  to CSP, in places.

2) Read the mark scheme for this exam carefully, paying particular attention to the 'indicative content' for each question. This is some of the best learning you can do all year as it gives you an idea of what the exam board is expecting. For your LR blogpost, identify ONE point you could have added for the first three questions in Section A:

Q1 additional point/theory: Intertextuality: cover creates intertextual reference to King Kong stories/movies of 1950s which engages audience using narrative.
Barthes: action and enigma codes; action code of weapon, facial expressions etc.

Q2 additional point/theory/CSP reference: bell hooks: “normalised traumatisation” – a good example of the way society defines male and female gender characteristics and the damage this can do.
Construction of Gutierrez significant in reflecting modern culture – mise-en-scene, camerawork, visual effects.
Bell boy characters reflects change in culture and society – traditionally masculine role/appearance but ends advert in purple jacket putting on mascara.

Q3 additional point/theory/CSP reference: van Zoonen sees gender as negotiated and dependent on social and historical context. She wrote that the meaning of gender is a “discursive struggle and negotiation, the outcome having far-reaching socio-cultural implications.” This is reflected in the Score hair cream
advert that reflects the social and historical contexts in which is was created.

3) The final question in Section A was a 20-mark essay that required an extended response containing a coherent argument. Using the suggested content in the mark scheme, write an essay plan containing five paragraphs/points that answer the music video and postmodernism question.

- the statement is mostly correct, is reflected more in Billie Jean
-Billie Jean uses the idea of 'copying the copies' as well as a ‘screen within a screen’
-the Letter to the Free uses the floating black square, which looks very modern, in contrast with the scene
-The Letter to the Free music video isn't that post-modern
-conclusion- postmodernism is used in both media texts successfully, and is overall, very useful

4) Section B began with two questions testing your knowledge of industry terminology. Make sure you know the answers to these (get the answers from the mark scheme if you have to):

Two benefits of vertical integration:Greater control of the production process, Lower costs and higher profits

Definition of diversification: Diversification is when a media company branches out into a different area of the media industries.
For example, many media companies have had to diversify to internet-driven distribution (e.g.
streaming) as a result of new and digital media.

5) Question 8 (TV industry) was arguably the hardest question on the exam. Write a new paragraph that answers the question referring to either Capital or Deutschland 83 and the global TV industry. Use the indicative content in the mark scheme to help you.

The modern times require the people all around the world that are active on social media to be culturally aware of other countries and cultures. In the TV drama series The Capital there're struggles of different cultures and social classes, but the events take place in one city. London is indeed a big city, but the show doesn't really reflect the idea of the whole world being global. The show is a State-of-the-nation drama, and it stumbles upon being a culturally aware production, but it was aimed specifically at a British audience. The show only reflects the global nature of London, which is still good, but it has the feel of being too closed off.
In comparison, the Deuthland 83 was sponsored by US companies and actually more popular in countries like UK or USA. The show talked about a historical content that most of the countries all around the world were involved in. Of caurse , the the events that The Capital is based at are also important in the history of the world, but it is shown by the perspective of London citizens.

Representation theory

1) Why is representation an important concept in Media Studies? 'The word representation itself holds  a clue to its importance.' Representation is what we associate with a certain  person, place, object or idea being  represented. 2) How does the example of Kate Middleton show the way different meanings can be created in the media? The idea of the person on the photo can be changed and manipulated by many people in media industry to create a scandal so that the audience will be entertained. The person on the picture is actually a different person than what the producers and photographers make of her.  3) Summarise the section 'The how, who and why of media representation' in 50 words. It's mostly about the needs and the expectation of the audience, also about genre codes and how the limit the development, the narrative that would cover all the 3 important questions and that every small detail is imprtant and has an impact on the words and storytelling. 4) H...

Videogames - Metroid Prime 2: Echoes

Metroid Prime 2: Echoes - blog tasks Create a new blogpost called 'Metroid Prime 2: Echoes case study' and complete the following in-depth tasks. Language Analyse the  game cover  for Metroid Prime 2: Echoes (above). 1) How does the cover communicate the genre of the game? It's very Si-Fi, a lot of cold colours, suggesting that the game will contain a lot of adventure/action narrative.  The cover often expresses the genre through the character holding a weapon which is a prop, conveying the theme of action and adventure. 2) What does the cover suggest regarding gameplay and audience pleasures? Escapism - the game is si-fi, a totally different world- the audience can divert from reality. Multiplayer - playing with other people. 3) Does the cover sexualise the character of Samus Aran? Why/why not? Costuming does not concentrate on her type of body; however, it can be argued that it accentuates her curves in some respects, which identifies her as...

At the beginning, 60's advertising agencies relied more on creative instinct in planning their campaigns then of actual research. The visual aspect was simply more important. The “new advertising” of the 1960s took its cue from the visual medium of TV and the popular posters of the day.The posters relied more on photography then illustration. 2) What representations of women were found in post-war British advertising campaigns? In the times of p...
